The rosids are split into two main groups plus one order which does not fit neatly into either group at the moment. This page deals only with that order, Vitales.

VITALES

As of 2023, 60 species of Vitales have been observed in iNaturalist in the US and 341 throughout the world.

Vitaceae is the grape family. Grapes, of course, are used to make wine and will be experienced in the Santa Ynez Valley in Trip 7. They will be used as a case study of how environmental factors can affect the phenotype, or physical characteristics, of a species. Even with the same genotype, or DNA characteristics, a species of grapes can taste different and have other differences depending on the environment in which it is grown. This concept will be reinforced in Trip 9 with Hatch Chiles in New Mexico.

  • FAMILY VITACEAE
    • Wild Grapes (Vitis sp.) - Perry Lake - NOAH
    • Virginia Creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia) - most iNat observations in the US for Vitales - Clinton Lake - NOAH
    • Porcelain Berry (Ampelopsis glandulosa) - introduced
    • Heart Leaf Peppervine (Ampelopsis cordata) - native - Perry Lake
    • Peppervine (Nekemias arborea) - not to be confused with the peppers in Solanales
    • Wine Grapes (Vitis vinifera)
