OPISTHOCOMIFORMES - HOATZIN

Hoatzin (Opisthocomus hoazin)
[© Claudio Dias Timm]
Hoatzin

The only species in this order, the Hoatzin (Opisthocomus hoazin), lives in the Amazon Rainforest. The Bronx Zoo tried to house a specimen in the 1990's but had difficulty keeping it alive. Like Great White Sharks and other animals, some just don't seem to be able to adapt to captivity. That means this is an entire order of birds that can't really be experienced in the U.S.
