The subphylum Hexapoda contains three classes and an order: Diplura, Protura, Collembola and Insecta. The first three groups will be explored on this page, while Insecta gets it's own chapter (next).

DIPLURA 

This is the order of Two-Pronged Bristletails. As of 2024, 8 species of Diplura have been observed in iNaturalist in the US and 23 throughout the world.

PROTURA 

This is the class of Coneheads, not to be confused with the names of some of the Katydids in Orthoptera, the order of grasshoppers. As of 2024, 0 species of Protura have been observed in iNaturalist in the US and only one throughout the world, near Monterey, Mexico.

COLLEMBOLA 

This is the class of Springtails. As of 2024, 156 species of Collembola have been observed in iNaturalist in the US and 275 throughout the world.

  • Springtail (Orchesella cincta) - most iNat observations in the US for Collembola. Introduced. - 5 (Puget Sound area), 10 (Washington, DC and NYC)
  • Springtail (Entomobrya atrocincta) - most native iNat observations in the US for Collembola - 7 (Monterey Bay)
  • Seashore Springtail (Anurida maritima) - 3 (Acadia), 7 (Monterey Bay)
