Chapter Outline
![]() Links to external sites will appear in pop-up windows. | Arthropoda is split into two groups based on the type of appendages they have around their mouths. Chelicerata have chelicerae and Mandibulata have mandibles. Chelicerata contains the spiders, ticks, sea spiders and horseshoe crabs while Mandibulata contains the centipedes, millipedes, crustaceans and insects. Mandibulata is then split between the subphylum Myriapoda and Pancrustacea. Some of the differences between these groups are the types of eyes they have and some differences between their nerve cells. Myriapoda contains the millipedes and centipedes while Pancrustacea contains the crustaceans and insects. Pancrustacea splits between the crustaceans and the insects. Crustacea, the subphylum of crustaceans, is distinguished from Hexapoda, the group containing the insects and springtails, by the type of limbs they have and by their larvae. This chapter will deal with the smaller groups within Hexapoda but Insecta gets the following chapter to itself.
