Arthropoda is the phylum containing animals with exoskeletons. This includes insects, spiders, crustaceans and more. It is by far the largest phylum of all livings things as far as species diversity. This one phylum makes up more than half of the species of all living things.

Looking at the graph in Figure 1 below, you can see how Arthropoda compares to the other major groupings of life.

This chapter will deal with the non-insect arthropods, which is still a large group, but only makes up about 15% of all arthropods.
