The order Caudata contains the salamanders. Great Smoky Mountains National Park is well known for its overall high biodiversity within the temperate zones, but it is especially well known for its diversity of salamanders. Outside of the tropics, the park has the highest abundance and diversity of these amphibians in the world.
As of 2024, 230 species of Caudata have been observed in iNaturalist in the US and 648 throughout the world.
