There is a wide variety of phyla within the animal kingdom and there has been some reshuffling of classification in recent years. Metazoa is split between the "lower" animals and the Eumetazoa, or "true" animals. Formerly, there were four phyla considered to be "lower" animals and the rest were in Eumetazoa. After more genetic evidence has come in, only one phylum has remained in the "lower" category. This phylum is Porifera, the Sponges, which are the focus of this chapter.
