Most of the life we are studying is found on earth. The study of earth is called geology. To understand the context in which life as we well know it exists, we must know something about geology. To understand how similar organisms can be found on continents currently separated by vast oceans, we must know about plate tectonics. To understand how fossils come to be in rocks, we must know how the rocks are formed. To understand how essetial elements and compounds are made available for organisms, we must understand the composition of the earth and its rocks.
