Placozoans are about as simple as an organism can be and still be considered an animal. So you may wonder why they aren't included in the last chapter with the sponges. While so little is known still about Placozoans, recent genetic analysis suggests they are more closely-related to Cnidarians and other more complex animals. That places them in this chapter. It is possible that they simply lost some of their complexity over time.

There are only a few species within the phylum Placozoa. None have been recorded in iNaturalist as of 2024.
