[Biopix] Chapter Outline
Links to external sites will appear in pop-up windows. | Even more so than "amoebae" and "flagellates", the term "algae" does not refer to an official taxon. The term refers to those organisms which are not plants but that photosynthesize. Sometimes even bacteria are given the name "algae" (such as Cyanobacteria, which are often called "blue-green algae"). In this guide, the "algae" included on this page are those eukaryotes, unicellular or multicellular, that do not fit into another, more formal taxon. For instance, many organisms called "algae" are stramenopiles and are included in the previous section. Even the Euglena could be considered "algae", but they are also excavates. What remains are the groups included on this page.
